6 YRQYukon River Quest 2001 was the first race for Paddlers Abreast, who are a group of Yukon women living with breast cancer. The original team learned about breast cancer survivors dragon boat teams across Canada and wanted to challenge themselves similarly. Every year since 2001 Paddlers Abreast has fielded a team comprised of both new and experienced paddlers and completed the race.
To regain full use of our upper bodies; to meet a physical and mental challenge; to prove that we can undertake strenuous exercise without developing lymphedema; to learn to trust our new bodies; to share a positive experience with other breast cancer survivors.We choose to do this in part of a public event in order to help other women living with breast cancer realize that they too can live full and active lives and to raise awareness about breast cancer.
